fiction fri… tuesday 59: back to you. part 5.

Well… I did it. I moved ‘fiction friday’. And I reserve the right to move it again… if I decide Wednesday is better. As you can see, I didn’t really think of a new name. I guess, for now anyway, the new name is ‘fiction friday tuesday’.

Oh… and sorry this installment is so short…

back to you. part 5. [previous: part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4]

Dani stared at her phone rereading every word she and Ava had just exchanged. She knew she’d have to apologize in the morning for keeping Ava up so late. She seemed so tired, almost not herself. But Dani couldn’t think about that. Her mind was preoccupied with every other detail from their conversation. With a long sigh, she tried to focus on Ava’s last word… ‘home’.

And she knew she was never going to get any sleep.

Home was swinging on the swing behind her parent’s house. It was talking and laughing with Ava. It was Christmas morning. It was Mom’s blueberry pie. It was Hodges Lake where days were spent walking and talking and laughing… where summers were spent sitting on the creaky dock looking up at a million stars in the sky… where nights were spent not sleeping in Gram’s cabin. It was every beautiful memory made with everyone she loved.

Those memories played like a movie in Dani’s head. The day she met Ava. The tears when Dani said goodbye and left town. Firsts and lasts and beautiful moments and painful ones. Even seemingly insignificant memories felt suddenly meaningful. But the significant ones quickly took over. Like the look on Adam’s face in the magic moment before he first kissed her. And the look in his eyes immediately after. And a hundred other memories she shared with him – the beautiful ones, the sad ones, the happy ones, the angry ones. All of them.

In a moment of clarity, Dani dropped her phone to her chest and gasped. Tears streamed from her eyes and her deep breath didn’t calm her. Home. Everything she saw. Everything she adored. Everything she wanted.

And she never saw Finn.

She saw Adam.

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy, too. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

  1. Oh no! Is she gonna drive to him, and he drive to her, only to pass like two ships in the night?

Good! The lightbulb went on! I am thinking another call to Ava is going to happen and then… 😮 Loving this! (Hodges’s Lake sounds great, btw) And also, how are you feeling today?

    • Thanks! I decided to just go with the first lake name I thought of… and it really means nothing other than it sounded the best to me.

I’m feeling better but I still have pain. I’m scared because even though I can take deep breaths now, I still have pain when I do… Is everything out of whack again? Sometimes it feels a little tight… And I’m still being crazy-cautious whenever I move. I did go for a short walk this morning… but something just feels off and I really can’t afford to go back to Dr D… plus I haven’t given it much time yet… ugh… sometimes I really hate my life!! Sorry… waaay too much info!

Aw, I hope it works out, that they don’t miss each other. Great building of tension. I like the Tuesday Fiction. I can understand how it’s probably easier to write early in the week, or have the weekend to write to post the piece 🙂
