Dani sat motionless in her car gripping the steering wheel. The thoughts in her head overwhelmed her. She had no idea what she was going to say, but she had to tell Finn about her doubts. She had to find the words to explain what was truly in her heart.
Dani nervously turned her key in the lock. She could hear Finn approaching as she opened the door.
“Yeah, it’s me.” She closed the door and met Finn a few steps inside.
“Honey, is something wrong?” Finn was confused. He’d just been with her and they talked, they kissed, they said goodbye until later when she would walk down the aisle to marry him.
“I need to talk to you.” Dani still didn’t know where she would find the words. “We should sit.”
Finn looked worried. “I don’t want to sit. What’s going on, Dani?”
“I’m not sure…” She was honest but not very forthcoming with what was on her mind.
“What? Dani… please. Talk to me.”
She stared into his eyes and saw his fear. She was already hurting him and she had barely spoken. But she had to tell him. “Finn, does this feel right to you?”
“Us… today… everything.”
“Honey, my God, yes. It does.”
“Are you sure?” Dani didn’t know what she wanted him to say, but she wouldn’t let it go.
“Yes.” He reached for her and held her arms in his hands. “Listen to me, Dani.” He took a deep breath. “I know you have a lot of history here. I know you have all sorts of old memories filling your head. But I love you and I know you love me. We belong together.”
Dani envied how sure Finn was. She longed for that certainty and that peace in her own heart.
“Dani?” Her silence left him lost. Confused. But still she said nothing. Finn had to fill the silence. “You told me everything. My God, we fell in love while you were getting over some of those memories. I know what you’re thinking. But, hon, that part of your life… it’s over. It was that overemotional, too-intense first love. No one can sustain that. People grow up. They move on. Things change.”
Again, Dani was amazed by him. His words, his thoughts… they made sense. They made more sense than anything in her head. I think he may be right. I’m trying to live in the past. Adam was a long time ago. She lifted a hand to Finn’s cheek and touched him. She managed a little smile. “I’m sorry, Finn. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Nothing. You’re just home again. Everything’s different. And I imagine you’re a little nervous.” He smiled. “Today’s kind of a big day. But you’re just having some pre-wedding jitters. It’s totally normal!” He pulled her into his arms and sighed softly. “I love you, Dani… and I’m going to marry you today.”
Dani wondered how she went from feeling happy with Finn to trying to bring the past back to life. Some part of her knew it didn’t make sense. But pre-wedding jitters did.
With a sigh, Dani pulled Finn just a little closer. And although she couldn’t see his face, she felt him smile as he held her. And somehow that comforted her to the place she should have been all day.
