I may have mentioned that I have children. [Shut up. I know, I mention them a lot…] Every year, we have a small family birthday party for each of them. For my son, we always have to have a snow date [January birthday]. We’ve had to move his party at least 4 times in his 11 years. My daughter’s birthday is in the fall. Her month-day is exactly the opposite of mine. [Her month is my date, her date is my month. And she is my clone. Eerie.]
For every party, I design everything. It’s not even necessary, but I love doing it. I design and print fancy invitations. I design and create party favors or make lovely little packaging for store-bought trinkets.
And I design and make the cake. Sometimes cupcakes instead. And sometimes cookies, too, for a little something extra.
Once the kids were old enough to tell me what to do, I lost the privilege of choosing their party themes. But they’ve picked some fun ones. And I love dreaming up something special for the cake. [And challenging myself ridiculously, at times. I am not a professional. I’ve never even taken a cake decorating class. I just used to watch Ace of Cakes… but I am no Duff Goldman.]
I’m proud of these creations and wanted to share them with you. I hope you’ll click on the first photo for each little group to flip through the larger versions… and to read my accompanying, sometimes witty, captions. All sorts of fun facts for your reading pleasure.
♦ the boy.
His 3rd. He was obsessed with The Lion King.
His 5th. Star Wars. Light sabers poking into ‘light side’ and ‘dark side’ cupcakes.
His 6th. Batman. First time I ever carved a cake. It’s a little messy. Oh, and batcookies. Yes, we wore capes.
His 8th. The Avengers. Simple cake but wait for it……
His 8th, too. Avengers cookies. These took HOURS. Love them, though.
His 9th. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey cupcakes. And handmade tiny pizza favors. I loved this one. And the invitation was a comic book he helped me design.
His 10th. LEGO. He LOVES chocolate so these chocolate LEGO guys were required. I used 5 kinds of chocolate for this cake.
His 11th. The Flash was this year’s theme. Cake is red velvet inside because The Flash wears red. And he had to have some chocolate frosting somewhere so, the top and bottom edges and inside.
♦ the girl.
Her 1st. Just a drawing I did and then tried desperately to recreate with icing. It was unpleasant, but I suppose it’s cute.
Her 2nd. A monster theme. I had no idea how to make the cake look fur covered. So I did this. The eye’s pupil is an Oreo.
Her 3rd. Every little girl has to have a princess party.
Her 5th. Tinkerbell. Seriously had no idea what the hell I was doing. Doormat is a Pop-Tart.
Her 6th. Looks tall but boring, but inside her My Little Pony cake……
Inside of the 6th birthday cake. Inspired by Rainbow Dash, one of the ponies.
Her 7th. Frozen. This could not be avoided. First time trying a tiered cake. Far from perfect, but not bad.
Her 8th. This is Ice Bear from We Bare Bears, an adorable Cartoon Network show. Look him up. I made the facial features out of chocolate. There was a fight over the nose.
Totally unrelated fun fact: When I posted weekly perk #1, I had 243 WP followers. Today I have 343. How weird is that? Increased by exactly 100 in 6 weeks.
Stay perky, my friends. But not so much that I want to kick you in the face.

About what sandra thinks
Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.
These are seriously impressive cakes Sandra. Lucky kids! 🙂

Thank you! I loved how that rainbow one turned out but it was scary because, of course, I didn’t cut it until it was time to eat it…so only then did I know if it turned out as I hoped!

Those are all fantastic! We get into making their birthdays special too. The homemade cakes aren’t our forte but we try. Yours are great! Loved the Ninja Turtles and The Flash! Great job! 😃

Thanks! I love doing this stuff. I was particularly proud of The Flash cake since I decorated it around midnight. 😀

🙂 Thanks! It happens kind of a lot… that I end up finishing up pretty late. Clearly I should know by now that I never allow enough time!

So true! Maybe I like the pressure. 😀 I’m really hoping my daughter is still very into Big Hero 6 when her next birthday comes because a Baymax cake (or cupcakes) will be SO easy! 🙂

Ha! Something easy? You know better than that! 😃

Yeah, she won’t just want his face… she’ll want me to build a whole Baymax… out of cake!

Now, that I’d like to see. Getting that done by midnight would be an accomplishment! 😃

My God, we have these parties at my mom’s so I’d also have to transport it! I think I would be freaking out for the whole drive! The 2-tier Frozen cake almost broke me… 🙂

Wow! These are absolutely wonderful and impressive! I’m like you in that regard. Always went all out on their birthdays and their cakes… I am currently (read: today) working on a lacrosse stick cake for my daughter’s 15th. I think that they’ll always remember those birthdays, don’t you? I know I always enjoyed it, even with all of the work. It looks like you did too!

Thank you! It is a lot of work but I do love it. I hope they always remember these! I still remember my childhood birthday parties and my mom bought our cakes. Sadly, that bakery is no more but their cakes were delicious!
I cannot wait to see what sorts of themes they ask for as they get older. It’s going to be great when I have to make a Walking Dead zombie cake or something…!
Have fun with your lacrosse cake!
