I’m going to say this twice… here and at the end: If this post starts a riot, down it comes. But really, I think it’s pretty non-offensive.
All I’ve heard about for weeks is tonight’s big game. Has everything else in the world ceased happening? I was surprised the local news took a break to give a weather forecast last night between otherwise constant talk of said big game.
As a lifelong New Englander [PLEASE do not throw things at me], I should be used to this by now. But it’s excessive. I do not need to know how long it takes the Patriots to get from the sidelines to the locker room. Seriously, I shit you not… that was on the news.
A few days ago, I was watching non-football-related tv and they broke in with a special report. I thought, oh fuck, what has a-hole president done this time? But it wasn’t that. It was a Tom Brady press conference. Dear god… seriously. I mean, dude, I wanted to see that Apple Cinnamon Muffin recipe on The Chew.
The thing is… I’ve never been into sports much. I played a few as a kid, but as a spectator? Nah. I’ve always been part of a non-football family… as a kid and an adult.
Despite so many people around here being total fanatics, part of the reason I don’t get so involved in the sports hype is that it’s fucking stressful! Why do we care so much? It’s not like we’re on the team (unless some professional athletes happen to be reading this… haha). It’s not like we get a payout (unless you’re a lucky gambler). [Hmm… maybe I should look into that.]
Yet if I start to watch, I start to want my home team to win, and I get super tense. Seriously… what the hell happens to people (including me)? I don’t know, but when the home team is in the SuperBowl, it’s kind of impossible not to get sucked in. I’m a total bandwagoner.
[And I have to add this: the half-time show? I LOATHE Justin Timberlake. Why him? Ugh. Gross. He has a seat on my plane-crash plane. Hmm… I should post about that sometime. ]
But forget all that…
I can tell you why I really like to see the Patriots win games. It’s very simple.
Eighty-seven cent coffee.
Every time the Pats win, Dunkin has 87-cent coffee the next day. The number is obviously not random. Rob Gronkowski does Dunkin ads up here… 87 is his number. Too bad they couldn’t get Brady to do the ads… his number is 12. That would kick ass.
I do have a question, though, for everyone except the three or fewer people out there who actually want the Patriots to win…
I get that you’re sick of NE winning all the time, but would you be sick of it if it were ‘your‘ team winning so often? I shouldn’t assume, but I’m thinking the answer is no.
People hate the Patriots. Like, violently in some cases. I don’t care… but I am sick of hearing it… and honestly, it makes me feel like I can’t admit I live here for fear that people won’t like me anymore. That’s how intense it is.
I hope you will all still be my friends no matter who you want to see win this thing.
As promised… I’m going to say this again: If this post starts a riot, down it comes. I think we’re all adults here. Probably.
I’m not so much a sports fan myself, and just like it when people play well, with dignity and skill. Maybe that disqualifies me from being a sports viewer these days. And yeah, Justin Timberlake–he never happened in my world, except for molesting Janet Jackson at the superbowl years back. I found that to be bullshit.

Yeah… and Justin gets asked to come back after that Janet thing?!? He should be banned for life… 😀

I’m no Pats fan, but I don’t hate them. It gets a little fatiguing, seeing Brady or Bellichik every time I turn on Sportscenter, but I don’t care who wins tonight. Now, if my team won the way the Pats do? Fuck no, I wouldn’t be sorry about it. It ain’t bragging if it’s true. 😃

That’s what I think… I know people are sick of them but obviously they must be good if they win. Are they supposed to start purposely sucking? No team would! And they shouldn’t! Anyway… I’m sick of it all anyway. It’s total overload around here…

Hahaha! I hear ya’. Though, I do miss football season when it’s over. It’s a great excuse for queso and wings! 😃

Yes… the food is good. Although since I don’t have friends and rarely watch games, I don’t partake. But I’d love some wings right now.

They do sound good, don’t they? You could likely have some delivered. That’s not an option for me. Hell, I can’t even get a pizza delivered. 😏

Oh… but the delivery time would probably be about 2 hours at this point. LOL Plus I’m trying to be good. Like, with my eating habits, I mean. Not in any other way. 😀

Hahaha! Well, Super Bowl is sorta like Thanksgiving. We get a free pass to eat whatever the hell we want….then pay for it for a couple weeks after. 😃😃

Yeah… but I’ve been feeling guilty since Xmas. Maybe even Thanksgiving. Then my son’s birthday in January. We’ve had way too much junk around here lately… and I have my weaknesses.
I am making “healthy” pizza tonight, though… I’m not so bad. 🙂

Hey, at least it’s pizza. That’ll work. 😃

Is there a game of some sort on today? Will it sort World poverty, or disease, or violence, or mental health issues? Who is Justin Timberlake?
Am I from another planet?
Answers on a postcard please!

Ha!
Big game. Whoopee!
Justin Timberlake is not worth knowing, in my opinion.
Not sure on the planet thing…

My favorite part of the Super Bowl is the inverse of most football games where one needs to run and do things during the commercials so that a spectacular play won’t be missed.
This evening I will make sure no commercial is missed and get things done during the game itself. Although I really want to see Chris Long get to Brady as often as he can.

Further evidence of my lack of fandom and general football knowledge… I have no idea who Chris Long is. I assume from your comment, someone from the other team who will be trying to take Brady out. And I’m sure he won’t be the only one…!

Actually, Chris was on the Patriots team last season and is now a defensive end on the Eagles. I’m guessing he has some knowledge of how to defend against them.

I love this!
And yes, I am a HUGE sports fan. I promise not to riot.
I never did understand that whole “We” thing sports fans give you when talking about their favorite team. I’m like . .”Oh, I’m sorry . . I missed where you were on the team!” lol.
Eighty seven cent coffee! That’s a home town win!
Love the post, Sandra.

Thanks! 🙂
Oh… I left something out — I get really irritated when I think about how much $$ these athletes make. I’m unemployed. It pains me. They could give me $5-10k/month and I’d be good. They wouldn’t even miss it! That’s spare change to them! *sigh*
Of course… once football season is over, so is the coffee discount. Until next year… 🙂

The salaries are completely skewed, and it isn’t getting saner any time soon. It’s quite similar to ancient Rome, actually.
When the governing bodies have no better ideas, give ’em bread and circuses . . .

Maybe I should write an angry letter. Think that would work? Going back to ancient Rome might be easier. I can just sit around feeding grapes to some dude.

And another thing. Personally, I think Super Bowl commercials have jumped the shark. It used to be fun, and kitschy. Now it’s like they try too damn hard. . .

I couldn’t agree more. I used to be one of those ‘I watch just for the commercials’ people. But they’re just not that great anymore. They lost me at puppy-monkey-baby. No… actually… they lost me way before that.

Puppy-monkey-baby was the nadir, fo sho! lol

We might check in a time or two to the game. We aren’t really football fans of any teams. My husband is a golfer, so that’s what’s on here most all the time, including right now. As for the half time…most times just awful, and I don’t like JT either. Now, if it was JT (James Taylor) I might want to watch. The commercials are all stupid, too. Just my opinion on it all. 🙂

I don’t think I could handle watching golf… it’s so boring! I did enjoy the Coldplay half-time show but I love them so in my eyes, they can do no wrong. The commercials aren’t usually good anymore. There was a time… years ago… when there were some good ones. But now… blah… 🙂

Yep, golf is so boring to me, too! All the men in my family, Dad, Uncles, Cousins, were all golfers, so I know more about golf than I ever wanted to know. haha! Way back in years, the half time shows were pretty good, like you say, and so were the ads. I don’t like sports, and now aren’t the Olympics coming up? At least their opening ceremonies are interesting. 🙂

Oh yeah… I don’t care about the Olympics either… 😐

I’m not into sports very much either, aside from hockey that is. And really, only if I’m going to a live game. I lived at the rink when I was in high school but it’s been YEARS since I’ve been to an actual game. Surprisingly, I’m always around soccer families though – guys I’ve dated, my work family. It’s always been soccer. I was into football for about 3 months in grade 9. But only because the really hot guy with the red jeep with cow-print fuzzy seat covers was the captain of the team.

I guess if you’re Canadian, you have to like hockey. LOL I went to high school football games when I was in hs… but that’s because everyone went to hang out there. I never paid attention to the game itself. Soccer bores me and I’m so glad my kids were never interested!

Lol this js a rumour!! Apparently you dont HAVE to like hockey as a Canadian. Ryan Reynolds doesn’t like it. But if you don’t then we just get to mock you haha.
HS football games aren’t as big here as they are in the USA. I do remember that in grade 9 our team won whatever it is that they win at the end of the season. I went to that game with some friends but I never learned to understand how to play so I just cheered when they did lol

I have only been schooled on the intricacies of football in the past year or so… and it was by one of my sisters… which is funny if you know her. But then again, she is really smart and knows something about everything… lol

I hear you. I live in CT so also sad about missing out on the DD discount, but other than that, I was rooting for the underdog this year and I’m glad the Eagles won because the whole Patriots fever needs to be taken down ten notches around here. Sheesh.

LOL… It really is out of control around here. (I live in MA.) I just feel bad for my husband who has to go to work tomorrow to a bunch of people who are going to be in terrible moods. (I don’t have to deal because I’m unemployed…)
