september by the ocean. #poetry

night.

some days I quietly remember
that warm night in September
when I found you by the ocean
both overcome with emotion
I knew I’d found the reason
I had to keep believing
because you smiled and words were spoken
and I knew… never again would I be broken

[I always think my rhyming poetry is terrible… but I was so happy I was able to write something that I’m sharing it anyway. I hope it’s okay. And this is not based on a true story (bummer)… it’s based on characters from my ‘secret book’.]

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

Poetry is hard! Rhyming poetry, I’ve always found impossible. But you nailed this one. Nicely done!

  3. There is no right or wrong with prose
as anyone who’s tried sure knows
the more you try to rhyme or not
you’re bound to get into an awful mess and terribly frustrated!

Keep up the writing, and the sharing.
    hugs.

I rhyme 99% of the time. I know it isn’t considered cool by most “enlightened” writers, but it is how my brain works. Just keep writing. Share what you feel like sharing, but always keep writing. Even if you don’t like it, someone will. I’m always surprised, I get the biggest reactions from posts I almost didn’t publish. Just keep writing!!!

    • That happens to me, too — One of my posts with the highest views ever is a poem I thought was terrible!

I think your rhyming is excellent. Some rhyming poetry I’ve read seems forced and awkward but not yours. I think it’s always in my head that mine will sound forced.

And of course, I have no idea what the hell I’m doing anyway. I’m definitely not “enlightened”… 🙂

  16. I really do like this poem, it seems like a memory from when you were with someone you enjoyed and had a great night on the beach. Those types of adventures are my favorite, when you really meet someone you will never forget. If you have a chance check out my poetry and art. Have a great weekend! caelidotblog.wordpress.com/2017/12/30/the-woman-in-blue/

beautiful poem and boy do I appreciate your honesty in saying you are critical of your rhyming poetry. I have that same issue and some times feel as though I force myself not to rhyme in fear of the self-criticism I dislike. Good to know I am not alone in that, though I hope to break from the notion.

Well here’s the thing. It seems you have the rhythm AND the rhyme! And yes . . . this poem is most definitely ‘okay’. Times a thousand.
