I need a name.

I know the name should come from me… if I’m so fucking creative, I should be able to come up with my own name. And ultimately, it will come from me. But I need some ideas thrown at me. Not literally. I’m not looking for personal injury. Unless I can sue for millions. Then, go ahead… hurt me.

I need a brand for my design work. I have this blog… what sandra thinks. And I used that to come up with my RedBubble shop name… what sandra makes. Cute… makes sense… fits. But I don’t want to use ‘what sandra makes‘ when I sell handmade, printed-by-me cards and such. (If I can ever manage to get my ass in gear and do that.) I want a name that’s kind of like a company name. But not stupid. Or cheesy. Something that fits.

I had a list of names I liked, but every single one of them is already in use in one way or another. Fail. I was messing around with creating a logo… but I can only go so far without a name. I even did some research… and found that the best names are one word… 5-10 letters long. That would be nice… but everything is taken. It doesn’t even have to be a real word! I made up a few that I thought  sounded good… but… still taken.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anything at all…

Edited to add:
—It does not need (nor do I want it) to include “sandra”…
—It is probably best that it’s not specific to cards since I may sell other things at some point…
—I want a catchy memorable name… like Google… Yahoo… Target… Apple… Starbucks… but it doesn’t even have to mean anything… or be a real word.

I know… I’m asking a lot.

And I should have said all of this in the first place… sorry!

By the way… when I edit a post, do people get a new notification (if you get notifications)? Does it move up in the Reader? I’ve always wondered that…

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

Maybe a little cheesey but “sandra says” for cards? Does it need to have sandra in it? Cardspiration?

  2. Hmmm. Let me ponder a bit. I’ll run it past my wife too and see if we can come up with something somewhat interesting.

  4. This is so relatable! It took me over a year of keeping a separate list for my new blog name. It takes time.

  5. An idea for your name could be Sand Rays from your name

  6. Ala Card (like ala carte with those accents I can never get to show up right)
Cardigan (oh, wait, that’s a real word) Card-igan?
Cardival (like Carnival with those accents I can never get to show up right–or is it carnivale?)
    Cardivore
Cardiful (like beautiful, but with cards)
I like searchingforfai’s Sand Rays. Close, but not too close to your name.

  7. DRAKARD (possibly followed by DESIGN). You could have it with backwards D’s, or R’s, or K.

It’s a palindrome, and originated, in my head, from San DRA KARD, but has nothing to do with cards.

I think name choosing is very important. As you may be able to tell shortly. I think it deserves a lot of careful thought. Though spontaneous Aha moments work too. My name for my writing blog is like that.

What I did when trying to think of a name for myself is I draw a picture of what I thought would be a brand sort of picture, like on a front page deal and all the things it would include. That I would spend a day on. Then try and make the picture that is now just a draft into a real picture, colored and everything. Basically what this does is it shows you an aspect of yourself that you would display, that your blog may be about in some way.

Then after this spend a few days freethinking names for your blog. It will be much more inspired now that you have done this other exercise. Try the name out for a bit and see if it feels right. And if it does, there you go.

For me the most important aspect of a name is if it feels right to who I feel I am. I have two names currently that I use for myself, one is frizzled cat which goes with a picture of what is definitely not a cat, more like a dinosaur, with crazy hair. My other name is Sandra D. As my real name is also Sandra. I chose that one cause it emphasizes my gender in a profession mainly run by men, I like to point out there are women 3d artists as well on occasion. And the D is ambiguous.

As far as Marquessa’s suggestions, I like Go Boldly Cafe
Though I almost wrote Go Bloody Cafe, which is not the effect you’re likely going for. Good luck with your name. I will be reading to see what you choose. 🙂

    • Thank you for this advice! I’m not planning to change my blog (or create a new one)… so “what sandra thinks” stays. I’m just trying to come up with something fitting for the things I want to sell… to start, mostly cards/invitations/custom paper goods. After that, who knows what else I may sell. That’s why I want something sort of nondescript… so I won’t feel the need to change it later. But for now… a logo with a name to go on the back like you’d see on a Hallmark card…

Crap! I feel like I owe ya one after you helped me re-design my last blog…

Without knowing where you live, is there some locale that can provide a description? Something like “Coldwater Creek”? “Bear Mountain Gifts”? “Blake Street Brokers”?
Something that expresses a sentiment, maybe. HappyNik-Naks? Endearments?

    • I was thinking about something related to location… but couldn’t come up with anything. I don’t know if I have enough of a connection to any particular place. That seems kind of sad… (who am I kidding? everything seems sad to me today…)

Well…this is a tough decision and you want it to be perfect, so it’ll take time. Brainstorming is a good process – even if it is a little stirring of the anxiety levels…
