And… I’m back. I think. I wrote so many versions of this part… I hope I chose the right one to share…

Tears fell from Dani’s eyes as she stared at Adam. She took her hand from her mouth and tried to speak. But she couldn’t catch her breath or her thoughts.

Adam tried to help by speaking first. But he only spoke her name before she stopped him.

“Adam… I can’t do this.” She took an anxious breath. “I was supposed to get married today. I should be there right now.” Still, her tears fell.

“No, you shouldn’t. You’re right where you’re supposed to be and you know it.” And her kiss proved it.

“I’m breaking his heart.”

“But if you go… you’re going to break your own. My God, Dani, be selfish for once!”

“I was selfish once. And I broke your heart.”

He took her hands in his. “My heart isn’t broken. Not anymore.” He smiled to her. “You told me you love me.”

“I told Ava.”

“Dani… you knew it was me.”

He was right. “But…”

“But nothing. Dani, if you wanted to marry him, you’d be at that church right now.”

She said nothing.

“You know I’m right.”

“Dammit, Adam!” She took a hand from his and curled it into a fist. She pounded on his chest. Only a couple of times. Not hard. But enough for him to know that he got to her. And that she was frustrated. Mostly with herself.

As she leaned to him and gently rested her forehead on his chest near her fist, he smiled. “Why does everyone keep punching me today?”

She lifted her head to see his face. “What?”

“I thought I had to give up on you… but I couldn’t do it. I went to the church to find you. You weren’t there… but Finn was.”

“Oh no…”

“I don’t know what you wrote in that note but he was pretty angry with me.”

Dani rested her hand on his cheek. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“It is… Because I wasn’t there.”

“Because you came here. To our place. Because you knew I would find you here.”

Again, her tears fell. She took both fists this time, and again pounded on his chest. But she wasn’t mad at him. She was mad at herself. “How do you know me better than I know myself?”

“Honey, I don’t.” He paused. “Or maybe I do.” He smiled for a moment before he continued. “But Dani… you knew exactly what you were doing when you came here.”

She took a deep breath and sighed. And she couldn’t look at him. “Yes.” She watched her own hands as she unclenched and laid them flat against his chest. “I wanted you to find me.”

He took her face in his hands and turned her eyes to his. “I found you.” He smiled. “Are you going to punch me again if I kiss you right now?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m going to risk it.” His words were soft and they barely made it through his lips before he kissed her.

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

  1. What were you worried about? This is great. Now, when does Finn show up? 😃

“And…scene!”…I’m picturing Jack from “Will and Grace” saying this!😊 Wonderful feels my dear Sandra! I’d love to see this as one of those Hallmark movies that I’ve been watching on Saturday nights. This story could end right here if you wanted… And you have “The Voice”… https://marquessamatthews.com/2017/08/09/having-the-voice/

  4. You really have excelled here Sandra. I can see the dilemmas you’ve had throughout, and you could have gone in so many directions, and even ended it in at least two places. Love it, all of it!

  5. Lennon Carlyle says:

How could you question this ending? There should be no doubt at all……it’s not overdone, it’s
flawless. Perfection for Dani & Adam. I believe you’ve made your characters and your fans very happy with the outcome of their love for each other. I am sad it’s ended but cannot wait for the next story 🙂

Aw, this is such a sweet moment even though she’s punching him. I like that detail it’s a very good way of ‘showing’ and not ‘telling’ Dam’s frustration, her feelings for Adam, and her confused emotions. Well done 🙂

  7. Sigh. So. Freaking. Good. Okay, so when does Finn break things up, because there has to be something to ruin the happy moment.:D

  8. Oh, very sweetly don, but not overly so. Yes, more resolution with Finn, of course. Perhaps there’s a wonderful bridesmaid to console him?
