Damn, I have no idea what I’m going to post for fiction friday when this story ends…

Standing at the edge of the dock, Dani wiped tears from her cheeks. She still wondered how she got there. Not to the lake… to a wedding day with the wrong man. Frustrated with herself, she sighed and reached up to the flowers in her hair and grabbed them. She ripped them from her hair and tossed them into the lake. She stared as they floated away. She didn’t care about the flowers. She didn’t care that’s she’d ruined her perfect wedding hair. She didn’t care about anything except fixing her mistakes.

Adam could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he neared the lake. And when he reached the end of the winding road he knew so well, he saw exactly what he knew he would find. The car. The long, shiny, fancy white car. Maybe even the one he drove past on his way back to town. It was a sign. He was right where he was supposed to be.

And so was Dani.

Adam could see her on the dock, standing alone staring out into the water. Memories of time spent there with her began flooding his head as he watched her. He could have lost himself in those memories for hours, but he had to shake them off. He took a deep breath and tried to remember how to walk.

As he slowly stepped toward her, he watched her tug at her beautiful hair, pulling flowers out and throwing them into the water. He knew what she was feeling… because he knew her. She was angry with herself. She didn’t know how to fix everything. And she always wanted to fix everything.

Adam stepped up onto the dock where he’d just been pacing and thinking and cursing himself. He tried to be quiet, but if the thoughts screaming in Dani’s head were anything like those in his own, she wouldn’t hear him anyway.

Barely breathing, Adam walked slowly closer to her. When he was just a few steps away, he stopped and watched her. She had stopped worrying about keeping her dress from the ground as she stood gazing out over the water. She lifted a hand to her face, and even though he could only see the back of her, Adam knew she was crying. He knew it and it hurt him like a thousand knives. He had to touch her.

Finally, he drew in a deep breath and as he let it escape, he softly spoke her name. “Dani.”

His voice didn’t startle her because she already knew he was there. She knew before he spoke. She could feel his heart pounding the whole time.

Dani’s shoulders rose and fell with her sigh. Adam held his breath as she slowly turned around. The moment he saw her eyes, his knees weakened and his heart raced madly. Cautiously, he reached for her, gently laying a hand on her cheek. He watched her lips as they silently traced the shape of his name.

In that moment, he couldn’t figure out how he could possibly take another breath without her. He leaned closer to her and touched his lips to hers. He felt her hands grasp his shoulders as he lost himself in the beautiful softness of her mouth. As their kiss deepened, Adam brought his other hand to her face. He held her like precious china as he tasted the love he longed for. He couldn’t imagine ever letting her go. He never wanted their kiss to end.

But in an instant, he lost her.

She took her mouth from his and pushed him away. When she took a step back from him, he was forced to let her go. She lifted a hand to cover her mouth as she gasped. “Oh God.
