fiction tuesday 62: back to you. part 8.

I hope you’re enjoying the story. I think this one is a little short… but it just worked out that way…

back to you. part 8. [previous: part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | part 6 | part 7]

When Adam turned onto Dani’s street, a million memories flooded his mind. They weren’t all perfect. But they were all her. He felt an overwhelming rush of emotions, and despite the jumbled mess inside him, he found a common thread. Whether they were talking or kissing or even arguing… there was always passion.

Adam slowly approached Dani’s house and stopped just before the driveway. He parked in his spot. The one under trees. The place he’d park every time he brought Dani home at night. The spot hidden from the house just enough for their goodnight kisses to go unwatched by her waiting parents.

Before Adam got out of the car, he looked out his window toward the driveway. And his heart ached.

He saw Dani in Finn’s arms. Talking. Hugging. Kissing. Adam grabbed his shirt over his heart as though that might stop the pain. He remembered Dani’s words from the night before. Adam was the love of her life. Were those words not real? Dani wouldn’t lie. Not to Ava… not to anyone. Adam couldn’t resolve the conflict in his head. But one thing seemed clear. What he saw between Dani and Finn… it looked real. They looked happy. And why shouldn’t they? It was their wedding day.

If Dani was happy, he had to let her be. That’s what you do for someone you love.

Unable to move, Adam stared as Finn got into his car. He watched Dani walking away, heading back to the house. Though it pained him more than he thought possible, he couldn’t do anything except drive away. Ruining Dani’s happiness… her perfect day… wasn’t his intention… that wasn’t the plan. He only wanted to love her. Maybe that meant letting her go.

“Adam? Where are you? What happened?” Ava asked.

“I’m driving. I’m just… driving.”

“Where are you going?”

“Anywhere… just not here.”

“Didn’t you talk to Dani?”

“I couldn’t even get out of the car.” He took a deep breath and focused on the road before him. “They looked happy, Ava. They looked so damn happy. I don’t understand. Nothing makes sense…”

Ava could hear the pain in his words. “Adam, I’m sorry. I don’t understand either. Whatever love she has for Finn is nothing compared to what she feels for you. I’m sure of it.”

“I guess we’re both wrong.”

But Ava didn’t believe that. “Adam…”

“No… Ava, I have to go. I need to be alone. I’ll be back before the wedding… I know I have to be there. I’ll be back…”

“Adam… wait!”

He barely heard her words as he disconnected. He dropped his phone on the passenger seat, but within seconds, it rang. Adam shook his head. No, Ava. He ignored it and just drove. And he tried to silence the voice in his head that kept repeating the same words. ‘I’ve lost her.

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.
