fiction tuesday 60: back to you. part 6.

I’m still not sold on ‘fiction tuesday’ but what’s a girl to do? I really wanted a new day.

I hope you’re enjoying the story…

Adam dragged himself to the kitchen where he found Ava sitting at the table sipping coffee.

“Morning, Adam.” Ava took another sip. “Sleep okay?”

“Not really,” Adam mumbled, pouring himself a cup.

“Yeah, the couch is not ideal for sleeping.”

“It’s not that.” Adam sat across from his little sister.

“Dani?” She already knew it was Dani.

“Yeah.” He paused for a moment before he spoke again. “Ava… I talked to her last night.”

“What?!” Ava almost choked on her coffee.

“You left your phone in the living room. She texted you… and…”

“Adam… tell me you didn’t pretend you were me…?” Ava looked horrified.

He sighed. “I told her I wasn’t you. I told her a few times… but I don’t think she believed me.”

“It never occurred to you to say, ‘Hey, this is Adam’?”

“Of course it occurred to me. I just didn’t do it.”

“Oh Adam…” Ava sighed.

“I know. I should have told her. But I was afraid she’d leave. I’m going to lose her today. I didn’t want to lose her last night.”

“You know you don’t have to lose her…”

“I already have. Ava, it doesn’t matter who she thought I was last night. She’s going to marry someone else.” He shook his head and took a deep breath. “I never told her not to.”

“But you don’t want her to marry him!”

“Hell, no, I don’t! But she needs to make her own decision. I can’t make it for her.”

“Well, you’re right, of course. I wouldn’t have told her what to do either.”

“Ava, I think she’s given up on me.”

“Like you’ve given up on her?”

“I haven’t…”

“Adam… you have. You’ve known this day was coming for months… but you didn’t even try to get her back…”

He closed his eyes and sighed. In a moment, he looked at his sister again. “But… I can’t win. If she calls off the wedding because of me… because she wants me… it means she didn’t really want to marry him.”

“Exactly!”

“But… if she doesn’t really want to marry him, why is she? Whether it’s about me or not? Why is she willing to spend her life with someone else?”

“Why do you have to be so damn logical?! You’re madly in love with her… and love is not logical. You’ve got to fight for her. Dammit, Adam, go get her!”

“But, my God, the wedding is in…” he looked up at the clock, “… six hours. How can I do this to her?”

“Maybe you’re not doing it to her. Maybe you’re doing it for her.”

Again, pieces of his conversation with Dani replayed in his head. ‘Who’s the love of your life?’ He shook his head and his lips curved into the slightest smile.

Curiously, Ava prodded. “Why are you smiling?”

“She made me… well, she made you… ask her ten questions last night.”

“You guys played ten questions?!”

“Yes.” Adam sat there in silence, his little smile growing.

“Oh, this should be good.” Ava’s sarcasm was not lost on Adam.

“She still loves me.”

“I am stunned.” More sarcasm.

“I asked her who the love of her life is… and…”

Ava smiled. “And she said you.” It wasn’t a question. She knew that’s what Dani said.

“Yes. My God, I couldn’t breathe. And she thought she was only telling you.”

“Maybe she didn’t. Maybe somewhere inside she knew it was you… maybe she was telling you. Asking you to stop her wedding…”

“Ava…” Adam looked down at the coffee mug in his hands for a moment before turning back to her. “You don’t really believe that, do you?” He didn’t give her a chance to answer. “I think she’s going to go through with it… I’ve lost her.”

“You don’t know that. If you want my opinion, and I know you always do, I think Dani wants to want Finn… but she doesn’t… not completely. She thinks she can’t have you… so when she found someone who loves her, she tried to love him, too. And maybe she does… but not the way she loves you. She’s settling.”

“I want her to be happy.”

“I think you can give her that.”

“Unless I’m too late.” He took an anxious breath. “She was crying. I could tell. And I told her she’d be fine… but she didn’t like that.”

“Because she wants better than fine…”

“Yes.” Adam ran a hand through his hair and looked at his sister. “Ava… I want her back. I’ve wanted her back since the moment I let her go.”

Ava gently punched him in the arm. “Then tell her! Adam… she’s not married yet.”

“Oh God.” He rested his hand over his heart. And the light inside him finally turned on. “I have to tell her.”

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

I’d say that if Dani said she still loved Adam, thinking she was telling her BFF that was most definitely the truth. Call it a sign from God or a from the universe whatever, Adam man up and get Dani back. Great excitement and build up in this one, especially with like 6 hours to go.

As for your title of your Tuesday fiction I was thinking you could rename it so it has a similar alliteration or assonance as Friday Fiction had . Like ‘Flirty Fiction Tuesday’ – ‘Teriffic Tuesday Fiction’ I don’t know what exactly but something like that just better and unique to you.

    Great stuff! 👍
