I did not inherit Mom’s gardening expertise. It’s rather unfortunate. If I had any clue what the hell I was doing, I might actually enjoy it. And not hate dirt and bugs quite as much. Okay, let’s not get ridiculous. I’d hate bugs no matter what.
Everything she grows actually grows. And grows so beautifully. Unlike every plant I’ve ever had… which I manage to kill.
Everyone who doesn’t know better assumes Mom’s yard is professionally landscaped. No professional has ever done anything at Mom’s house. Every single thing out there was done by my parents.
Even the structures. Mom and Dad built the cabana by the pool. Complete with a ‘bar’ (kind of) and changing rooms.
Isn’t it lovely? Mom is great at designing and decorating… outside… and inside, too. But we spent little time indoors yesterday. (I know… me! Outside a lot… without being immersed in water! That’s messed up!)
Just look at this! In my yard, it probably would have shriveled up and died. And of course, Mom’s been doing this for so long that everything is perfectly overgrown. And just… pretty.
I remember Mom creating this tiny path… about a foot wide… by the pool when I was little. So cute. Especially with the pink petals everywhere…
… like on these sweet little steps on the path to the vegetable garden. Can’t wait for those tomatoes. Yum.

Wow!! Your mom and dad are amazing!

I know! I wish Mom lived closer so she could make my yard as beautiful. Not much in the way of new structures since my did got sick and passed away 5 years ago… but so much was there already… it’s so peaceful.

So sorry about your dad, Sandra. From the pictures, it does look very peaceful.

Thanks… it’s been years… we’re good. I miss him, of course, but so many of his creations live on. 🙂

Looks so lovely and peaceful Sandra. I didn’t inherit a green thumb either but your parents yard looks gorgeous. 🌿🌷

Thank you… well, thank you on their behalf… I certainly didn’t make it gorgeous! 🙂

Doesn’t matter. You can still enjoy it. How you doing?

I don’t really know! Kind of okay lately… but today I feel melancholy… Can’t get sad things out of my head. Mixed feelings, I guess. I really hope I feel better tomorrow because it feels like I’m slipping downhill and I don’t want to go there…!

See if you can shift those thoughts, you’ll be okay. Hugs xo

She definitely has a green thumb. Do y’all do vegetables at your house?

I kill everything. I did tomatoes one year… it went pretty well, I guess, but I’ve tried again since and it went poorly. It’s probably me… I’m a jinx.

Nah, just amend the soil and water. Voila! Did you put ’em in full sun!

All I know is according to my mom, my plants were in a good spot. I don’t think I could do it again now even if I wanted to… something out there eats everything… 😦

That sucks. We use Dove soap, dissolved in water, and spray it to keep bugs off our veggies. If it’s birds or rabbits, a scarecrow or some tin pie plates to clang around might work. Plus, the clanging might irritate your too-serious-about-his-lawn neighbor. 😃

I should hang the noisemaker pie plates anyway… only to irritate the neighbor… 😏

Hey, I’m so sorry, but I set this on the charger last night and just now saw this. I promise I didn’t just leave ya’ hangin’. 😕

Well, I’m still sorry. We were camping and cell coverage was sketchy at best. I was awake, but the phone was dead. Hope you’re feelin’ better. Still need a laugh? 😃

I always need a laugh… but I do feel better than I did last night (when I needed assistance to get to sleep)… 🙂

Hate not being able to fall asleep. I was up way too late last night too, but it was by choice. I’m feeling the pain today though. Driving 8 hours with a hangover that’d choke a horse isn’t particularly fun, especially with the twists and turns in the mountains. 😩

I have not had a hangover since college. Of course, I barely drink… 😃

Me either. But on a boys weekend, no kids or wives? I’m currently wishing I didn’t drink at all. 😲

If you need a laugh, just picture me hanging my swollen head outta the truck window heaving up the overly filling breakfast I forced down….on top of about 6 Advil. Praise God for weed. It’s my only saving grace today. 😎

I wish I had a source for that at the moment. Then again… they’re would be excessive cookie dough happening… that might be bad…

Cookies are never bad! It’s funny, but my wife says I’m like a professional. I will resist the munchies for as long as the buzz lasts. I will not kill my buzz by eating. Now, when it’s gone, I’ll crush a sheet of chocolate chip cookies in short order. 😃

Hahaha… I’ve never been good at resisting… anything, really. Sisterly I have self-control issues… 🙂

Well, I do too. But not when it comes to my herb. Well, herb munchies, at least. 😃

The pink petal footpath is so beautiful! This could be very well me and my mom. My parents have changed places several times( as my dad worked in Airforce) but she has left every place prettier than before, with a beautiful garden and fencing. I remember people stopping by outside our fence to take pictures of our garden in the background. I remember Ma fighting with the little girl who plucked her flowers :D, I remember Ma setting up new plants and making everything beautiful again. And now after retirement, they have a beautiful garden, grow own vegetable and spend all afternoon outside.
And am the exact opposite, plants die and I just forget to provide even basic water 😦

Yes – exactly the same… Although sometimes, rather than forgetting to water, I over-water. I just can’t seem to get it right. It’s something I’d love to be good at but I don’t think it can really be learned… I think you’ve got to be born with it… 🙂 I inherited a lot of wonderful things from my parents, but not this one!

Wow, your mom’s landscaping is beautiful! That’s my dream, to have a nice, landscaped yard. The problem: I don’t have the patience to wait that long. Or weed that much. I’d rather water and weed for a few months, then harvest yummy tomatoes and green beans. Mmm, tomatoes …

She is amazing… then I come home and everything’s blah! But… she’s been at it for a long time… She and my dad would have been married 50 years if he was still here, so… a very long time!

Oh that garden belongs in a magazine! I’m with you though… I hate gardening even though I’d love everything to look like that. I need magic powers or servants… Lol! I’m happy to have a green lawn, which is only due to the weeds that don’t die when it stops raining. I imagine we’re having the same weather as you are… nice yesterday and rainy and miserable today. Glad you got to enjoy the day with Mom!

Yes… Just need to get Tony over here to take better pictures! When my son was very little my mom made him a book of colors and all the pictures were ones she took in the garden. It was perfect. (Still have it, of course!)

this is beautiful!! I love gardening, but I’m more of a vegetable garden person than a flower garden person. and the plants have to be outside. I once tried to keep a plant alive in my apartment in Korea and got bored of having to care for it lol

I want flowers everywhere. Not that I don’t want fresh veggies… but the flowers… Must be the romantic on me.

aww so awesome! Maybe you can get some seeds from the ones you really like at your moms and then plant them at your place? 🙂

I can try but I suck at all of it. Plus mom’s been at it for nearly 50 years… I’m not going to have anything like what she’s got!

ooo yes very true! but start with just one plant and go from there!

Wow this is so beautiful! My mom sprays our backyard to death to kill all the weeds so nothing is growing back there. She is managing to keep our snake plant alive though lol.

My daughter has a small potted plant right now… Something she planted and brought home from school… So far so good! But I’d better stay away from it! 🙂

That’s so cool. I had a potted plant before I left school for the summer, by I left it with a friend. He has a green thumb so it should be ok ha ha. I totally understand what you mean.

I’m actually not terrible at this. What I lack is time….
I plant a lot of low-maintenance stuff. Lilies, peonies….they come back every year. I’ve also had tremendous luck with my rosebush.
