fiction friday 57: back to you. part 3.

fiction friday.

Yet another ‘making this up as I go’ story. Don’t know why I do this to myself…

back to you. part 3. [previous: part 1 | part 2]

Dani: are you awake?
Dani: please be awake…

Dani. It was Dani. Ava, thank you for forgetting your phone. Adam stared at the screen for a moment that felt like an eternity. Finally, he took a deep breath and before he realized what he was doing, he started typing.

Ava’s phone: yes… I’m awake.

Not technically a lie.

Dani: thank god. I need you.

With a long, deep sigh, Adam felt his heart pound in his chest. All he could think was, ‘My God, I need you, too.’ But he couldn’t type those words.

Ava’s phone: what’s wrong?
Dani: I can’t sleep
Ava’s phone: me either

Still not technically a lie.

Dani: I can’t stop thinking
Ava’s phone: about what?
Dani: everything
Ava’s phone: could you be more specific?
Dani: I don’t know
Ava’s phone: are you okay?
Dani: I don’t know that either

She wasn’t okay. He knew she wasn’t okay. And he knew he had to tell her she wasn’t talking to Ava.

Ava’s phone: Dani… Ava’s asleep
Dani: please don’t go…
Ava’s phone: I’m not going anywhere. But Ava is sleeping
Dani: please stop messing with me… I need to talk this through

He couldn’t bring himself to abandon her when she so desperately needed to talk. He was being a friend. Or he was rationalizing because he didn’t want to let her go.

Ava’s phone: okay… then talk to me
Dani: where do I start?
Ava’s phone: anywhere
Dani: remember when we were kids we would do that question thing?
Ava’s phone: ten questions?
Dani: and you have to be totally honest no matter what the questions are?
Ava’s phone: I remember

Adam did remember. Ava and Dani tried to pull him into their silly game all the time.

Dani: can we do that?
Ava’s phone: ok
Dani: ask me… maybe I can sort out my thoughts

He knew he needed to tell her she was talking to him. And not just by repeating that Ava was asleep. She had to know she was talking to Adam. But he wanted to be there for her. And Ava really was asleep. He didn’t want to leave Dani alone with no one to talk to. And he never lied about who he was. He just left out vital information.

Dani: please?
Ava’s phone: who’s your best friend in the world?
Dani: oh come on… you always ask me that… you know it’s you

But her best friend wasn’t Adam. It was Ava.

Ava’s phone: I told you already… Ava’s asleep
Dani: yeah, whatever you say. please just ask me…
Ava’s phone: how do you feel? right now, no thinking… just tell me…
Dani: scared… am I making a mistake?
Ava’s phone: marrying Finn? Do you love him?

Adam didn’t want to see her answer. He knew what it was but he wasn’t sure he could handle seeing it. Maybe he was punishing himself for not blurting out who she was talking to.

Dani: I do but I shouldn’t feel like this if I’m doing the right thing, should I?
Ava’s phone: hey I thought I was asking the questions…

No response.

Ava’s phone: I’m just teasing… but I can’t tell you if you’re making a mistake…

Even though a huge part of him wanted to tell her just that. Don’t marry him. It’s a mistake.

Ava’s phone: do YOU think you’re making a mistake?
Dani: I don’t know. I’ve been lying here in bed staring at my dress for hours and I can’t sleep and I can’t relax. I know Finn loves me… he’s good to me… but…
Ava’s phone: is he the one? who’s the love of your life? is it him?

Adam held his breath. Her next words would break his heart and he had no idea why he asked that question. In some messed up, masochistic way, maybe he thought it would help him to see Finn’s name

Ava’s phone: Dani? the love of your life… c’mon… who?
Dani: I think you know
Ava’s phone: tell me…

swash.

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

  1. Yep, this seems like a no-win for Adam. If she says he’s not, heartbreak. If she’s says it is him, what the duck does he do now? Hmmmm. 😊

This is fabulous! You’ve left us hanging at just the right spot. Since I’m so late to reading, I scanned through your comments too and I agree about Fiction Friday. How about Writing Wednesday or Storytelling Saturday or Sunday? Because Friday has to be the slowest day on here. And more people should read this!!!
