When Jimmy Fallon first took over The Tonight Show, I loved it. I’m not sure when it took a turn, but when I watch now, most of the time, I’m not laughing. I’m just annoyed. What happened to him? Or is it a it’s-not-him-it’s-me situation? Whichever it is, I just don’t enjoy the show like I used to. Jimmy has gone from funny to only sometimes funny. And often annoying.
First, what the hell is that welcome bit about? He comes out on stage and proceeds to say welcome five times in a row and then tells the audience how lucky they are to be there in his presence.
“Welcome welcome welcome welcome welcome to The Tonight Show. This is it. You’re here. You made it.” Applause. (While I cringe.) “Hot crowd… hot crowd… hot hot crowd.”
Ugh. Bite me. Annoying as hell. I’d rather be in Seth Meyers’ audience.
And who the fuck loves and worships every single person he’s ever met? Jimmy is the exact same level of overexcited for every single guest he’s ever had on the show. And have you ever noticed that his guest, no matter who it is, is “the best”… and is “one of the biggest stars in the world”? I know he’s not going to say, “I really can’t stand this guy, but welcome [name here]…” (Although that would be hilarious.) But instead, it all just sounds insincere.
The recurring segments… some of those… oh my god. That awful ‘Ew’ thing with him dressed as a tween girl…? Shoot me. That has got to be one of the most annoying things I’ve ever seen in my life. Who the fuck likes that? [No offense intended if you do find it funny… I won’t judge.] ‘Freestylin’ with The Roots’… ha! It’s so obviously pre-planned and rehearsed. Damn, at least try to make it seem improvised! Not that The Roots aren’t awesome… but I really hate this segment.
The games… this is where Jimmy redeems himself… somewhat. Box of Lies was funny the first few times, but I’m over it. Now it’s just stupid. But Giant Beer Pong? That’s fun to watch. And Slapjack… I love it. Anything with a gigantic prosthetic hand can’t be bad. It can only be hilarious. [I need one of those for when my husband does something stupid!]
Maybe I’m just sick of Jimmy. I don’t know… but my favorite part of his show is “Stay tuned for Late Night with Seth Meyers…” Oh, sometimes I bail and watch Colbert or Kimmel. But I keep coming back to Fallon. Maybe I’m subconsciously hoping I’ll stop wanting to punch him in the face. Or maybe I subconsciously like watching while thinking of punching him in the face…
Or whacking him with a gigantic prosthetic hand.
I was the same way with Fallon – at first, I loved it so much, but now it’s just meh. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full show, though. I just youtube clips and you are so right! The older shows are much better. I watch for the games too – and on youtube it’s so much easier to just watch those 4 minutes and then switch to something else haha

Yeah. I currently stay up way too late so I’m always watching something. My favorites are the later ones… Seth Meyers is the best one… and I like James Corden, too.

I used to watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on tv (but always the day after since it was too late for me) but when I left university I stopped having access to tv’s with regular network shows so I’ve missed the transition to all these new ones. I like the clips of Seth and James that I see online though!

They’re funny. I really love Seth’s news-style humor. And James… well, he has some bits and games he does that are hilarious. And he’s like, a broadway guy, so he sings and stuff too. The other night, he did a Beauty and the Beast thing with some of the guys from the movie… James was Belle… and they performed on the street. Literally… in crosswalks. LOL

I’m disappointed in most late night television now. I agree that Fallon is pretty boring.

Well… I love Seth Meyers. And James Corden is hilarious… and those are both the second/later shows…!

I like them both, too, but I couldn’t stay up that late. I’ve thought of recording them but it would become just one more thing to do!

Well, you can watch them online or on demand the next day… you know, when you have spare time. LOL

We don’t get that show much in Ireland. I don’t think I’m subscribed to the channel…but hey looks like thats a good think because he sounds like someone I’d like to give a slap in the head to for annoying me 😉

I haven’t watched the Tonight Show since Johnny Carson! Lol! I’m never up that late anymore.

I have never seen the Tonight Show with Carson. And I stay up way too late. I’ve watched all of them… but, obviously, I have my favorites. It’s weird with Fallon though because I really used to like him… but then he just got annoying…

His well of material isn’t very deep then. Carson was fantastic – probably very dated by now but so funny in his day.

I don’t watch, but I’d prefer Seth Meyers to Fallon any day. The big hands look pretty great though. I need one of those for attitude adjusting my boys. 😃

I know! I love those hands. And it would be the best thing ever to have here. The first-time-use would be the best because I’d hide it until I needed it. They’d be like… hysterically laughing. LOL (Which I guess defeats the purpose, but whatever… I’m already the funny parent…) 🙂

It’s all fun and games ’til somebody gets whacked by a giant hand. Wait, that sounded a bit wrong. You know what I mean. 😃

Ha. I only watched at the beginning but that’s sad that he went downhill. I think his enthusiasm is adorable but I can see it getting annoying. I didn’t watch long enough. I love James Corden, though I’ve only seen his show a bit. I love him as an actor. He’s got talent.

That’s exactly what I think happened… his cute almost childlike enthusiasm totally started to get on my nerves!
James Corden really is talented. I love that guy!

I used to really like Fallon, but he has really gone downhill in terms of entertainment. I strongly suspect it has a lot to do with his alleged ‘drinking problem’. It doesn’t help that many of his games are centered around drinking. You are right about the insincerity – and when he laughs at EVERYTHING that is said – ugh! I used to catch the clips on youtube, but now I can barely stand to watch those.

I didn’t know about the alleged drinking thing. But yes… when he laughs at everything and everything is his favorite… it all becomes meaningless!

Same! I pretty much don’t watch too much late night shows. Granted now I’m too tired getting home at near 11 to begin with. I do love catching up on Trevor Noah. Although it usually just raises my blood pressure.
