Last year I participated in completed the April a-to-z challenge. I was on a poetry bender at the time, and although my original theme was ‘small’, it quickly became clear that my real theme was ‘poetry’. So that happened.

I am going to do it again… the challenge, I mean. But I need a theme… and I don’t have one. Theme reveal day is March 20.  I have 7 days to conjure up a brilliant theme.

Let’s start with my tagline…

fiction.
Well, it appears that I am no longer a fiction writer. The best I can do lately is, ‘Hey, I just had coffee with a friend and on the way out of the café, a hot guy smiled at me.’ There… fiction. The end.

poetry.
Poetry is dead to me. Sigh. No, it’s not… not really. But I haven’t written anything very memorable lately. Plus, I did this last year.

art.
Other than the doodles I’ve been doing recently, my art has garnered little interest. Funny how much time I spent on my work in college… wasted? Maybe… just another poor decision.

humor.
I know I’m funny sometimes. But I’m not sure I can be funny on-demand. For 26 days in April. But… if I had to come up with something humorous to post nearly every day, maybe it would make me laugh… make me have a better day. [I’m slipping into cheesy territory and I’m not happy about it.] I’m not sure about this one. But of these tagline options, I think this is the only contender.

truth/life.
You have been subjected to waaaay too much of my ‘truth’ and my ‘life’ lately. If I post much more, you’re going to send the men in white coats for me. Or you’re going to run away screaming. Or both. [Aside: At least make sure the men in white coats are hot. Thanks, friends.]

Moving on…

I’ve come up with a few theme possibilities, none of which are any good.

emotions.
I think this might be too close to the truth/life conundrum. But when I thought of this, I was thinking emotions in general… not necessarily my emotions. Not sure how this one would play out. I’m thinking it won’t.

i-have-dreams-you-knowwish list.
I have dreams, you know. I have no doubt that I can come up with a wish, a want, a dream for every letter of the alphabet. But I’m not writing a Christmas list here. It shouldn’t be just ‘b is for bracelet’. It has to be more than that. I’m skeptical…

poor life choices.
Yeah, I know. This theme could also be named ‘regrets’. Not very healthy. But I have sooo many to choose from. No problem coming up with posts here…

perk.
Yes, I actually thought of this all by myself. The ‘weekly perk’ went away. Then I tried simply ‘the perk’ but I couldn’t keep that going either. Almost every day? A perk for every letter of the alphabet? This one may be too much of a stretch for me. I might be stressed as fuck trying to come up with ‘perks’… thus defeating the purpose.

people.
Not just any people. Real people who have touched my life, good or bad, past or present. I’d say future, but then we’re back at fiction. I bet I could come up with a person in my life for every letter… and write something about said person. But… this might be totally boring. In fact, I’m already bored.

That’s it. That’s all I’ve got.

Please help me. I’m begging

arrow.

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

Favorites songs and explain why or a short poem based on how it makes you feel? Favorite artist?

    • Oooh… songs. I did think of that at one point but I guess I forgot. Ha! I don’t know if I want to do it, though, because I’d still like to post my ‘song of the day’ thing sometimes. I have to think about this one! Thank you!

Oh, I wish I could help you with this the same way you helped me! I think all of your ideas are good ones, you just have to find one that you can get really excited about. The people one sounds interesting! Would you use real names, though? That might make it difficult…or easier if you are making up names you can easily get one for each letter haha. I also like the idea of music! Your music posts are always great!

Hmm, I like perks or wish list. Do you need a theme? Can the theme be “whatever the fuck I feel like writing that day?” No? Hmm…

    • Having no theme will be really bad for me because lately I’ve been having trouble posting anything at all. I need a theme… I’m hoping it’ll get me out of my rut.

It’s just a thing I’m doing, so no, I don’t have to have a theme… nor do I have to have one by 3/20… But I really really think I need one. At least by 4/1!

  4. I think the emotion idea is good. I saw a mention above about music. Maybe tie the two together? You don’t give yourself nearly enough credit. I’m sure whatever route you go, it’ll be great. You’ll have at least one regular reader regardless. 😃

Leave it open. Use your entire tagline as your theme and you can vary the posts according to what you feel like writing. Remember fiction could be as short as a six word story.

    • I was just saying to Vic… I NEED a theme. Not because it’s required but because I’ve been having a LOT of trouble posting anything worthwhile (or anything at all) lately. If I can come up with a theme, I feel pretty strongly that it’ll help get me out of this rut. Leaving it open is going to be way too stressful, I think. I need something.

I did this last year but I didn’t realise you were supposed to have a theme. Just jumped on the bandwagon without reading the rules and wrote 26 posts based entirely on just the letters. Needless to say it made for some pretty bad content. Obviously that’s no help to you except that whatever theme you choose, you’re unlikely to sink to the depths my blog managed last year…

  7. Crap, is that coming up so soon? I have no theme this year either. I love your doodles. I still think you could make a very smart and funny and cranky Sandra in the City type comic strip for grown ups that I would adore reading. I still remember a post you did awhile ago about how people drive that was hysterical and exactly what most people would like to say!

It will come…don’t fret. Breathe slowly in and then release out…then type.
Yoga breath typing…ummmmm…. (not Yoga Berra though that might be considered too)
alphabetical free verse yoga breath typing
    a is for air
    b is for breathe
    c is for can’t
    d is for die
    e is for ever….see what I mean.

It will come April 1 you’ll be ready.

You cold just pick a quote, a short oneveach day and use that. Or write a two line piece of poetry. A short lune or haiku. Or a septoplet those are all short poems! You can do it. Write the first word that comes to mind with each letter than do your quote/short poem to that theme. You can do it girl!

  12. Hey, Sandra I’m new here. All the best for the a to z challenge. I’m also taking part in the challenge! I’ll be looking forward to reading your posts. All the best, again! 😊

  13. Why not a day-of-the-week theme? Monday is poetry, Tuesday is art, Wednesday is something else, etc. It’s your blog and YOU are not a singularly-themed gal!

I like the emotions idea. Angry, bottled-up, cantankerous…. I wish I had thought of that.
