No… not that kind of doctor.

No… not that kind either.

In two days, my son is going to be 12… and after 11 birthdays, we’re running out of themes. Batman, The Avengers, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Flash… and a bunch more… we’ve done them all. But I must make a party invitation. It’s my thing. And I hate to think he’s getting too old for a ‘theme‘ (other than technology and money, his two favorite gifts).

Enter Doctor Strange. How could one not enjoy this movie? (No, don’t tell me. I like thinking everyone loved it as much as I did.)

I decided to use his iconic cape in my design… since it already has a life of its own…

Here’s the result of me spending way too much time on this… stand up collar and all. [Oh yes — I really did print one fake invitation with no personal info… my son’s name is not ‘boy’!]

(If you’ve seen the movie, you may be amused by the fake street address…)

Now… I must come up with an idea for the cake. Which has to be chocolate. With chocolate. And also, chocolate.

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

    • I have no market… and no marketing skills… and I just find it overwhelming to try to set up shop. I’ve stopped in the middle of the shop creating process on Etsy at least 5 times. Maybe I just don’t have the confidence to pull it off…

The cake has to be all chocolate… so decorating is an issue. My son and I talked about a few possibilities but I’m really not sure. Party is Saturday… cake baking has to happen Friday. I’ve got 2 days to figure it out…!

      • Confidence shouldn’t be an issue! From what I’ve seen, you’ve got skills. I’ll tell ya’ what, every day I’ll post a Stuart Smalley quote here until you realize you rock. Deal? 😃

        • Haha. I know I’m good at this. What I lack is the confidence to believe I can really make anything from it. I come to two roadblocks…and I bail. First… the shop needs a name. I’ve been stuck on that for a long time. Second… I need something to post as a sample before I can offer anything to anyone. This one I posted here is the only one I’ve ever made with fake info. I think is have to go back and do that with the others… I may or may not still have the paper to make that happen… (Plus the crazy amounts of time…!)

But you can try to convince me whenever you want… 🙂

So cool! I can’t wait to see the cake! I haven’t seen the movie yet. (What?!?) I love Benedict Cumberbatch. I love all things Marvel. What is wrong with me?

CAN YOU BE MY MOM!?! My birthday is in April 😀

I haven’t seen this movie yet but everyone I know who has seen it has loved it.

But seriously, this is awesome sauce with cherries and sprinkles and chocolate and caramel. I love it. You needs to start your own etsy store or something

Hey Sandra, my son turns 16 tomorrow (the 20th) as well … and guess what his two favourite things are. You guessed it, technology and money! Good luck with the party invites. No arty invitations from this mum, it’s straight out pizza, movie and friends. Enjoy 😊🍰🍕

    • My son’s birthday is actually today… the 19th. (It’s 2:29am right now… he was born at 1:17am… 12 years ago. Guess I’ve always been a night owl!)

There will be pizza for the party Saturday… and the forecast is actually decent! We won’t have to reschedule because of snow… Yay!

Oh, by the way, can I hire you to bake the cake? 😊😊

  13. Do you have any talented bakeries locally? Because you should totally partner with cake decorators to make invitations.

    • I don’t really know if there’s a place. It would be great if I had the necessary ability to approach someone for something like that. It’s just not something I’m capable of. I know it sounds like no big deal to “normal” people, but talking to people like that — feels completely impossible to me.

      • Also I think you could partner with photographers too.

I get that talking to folks is…wow, difficult isn’t even the word. I’d go into it assuming the answer is no….

Wait. What about putting a note on the back of the invites you send? “Want something like this for your next gathering? Contact awesome@me.com” ? Non-invasive….

Or do you have any friends who do home based businesses? Next time THEY do a show, ask them if you can share a table?

I know this is all harder than it sounds. You just have such amazing talent, I hate to see you not share it and lose a chance to do something you clearly love. 🙂

        • Most of the parties I make invitations for are just family… The only time I send to anyone else is when I do Christmas cards. I like that idea though. I could do it at Christmas.

As for the friend thing… well… I don’t have any friends. I’m not saying that in a self-pity way — I literally have no friends offline.

The other suggestion I always get is Etsy. I’ve tried to set up a shop… And I’m partway through… but I always get stuck at naming the shop!
