The first time I heard this song, I died a little inside. I think it actually ripped out a piece of my heart. I had a lot of angst. I guess I still do. Isn’t that supposed to go away when you grow up? Hmm. I’ll get back to you on that… when I grow up.
This song easily makes my top-ten-best-songs-of-all-time list.
The original is the only version for me. Yeah, the Johnny Cash cover is well-loved, but me? I must have the original Trent Reznor. Because he’s fucking amazing.
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I haven’t heard this song in ages. It’s pretty intense- kind of makes you want to head towards the light. Kidding. But seriously- this song is powerful and sad in equal measure. I heart it. Great post. Cheers.

It is pretty dark. Of course, that’s a huge part of why I love it… the darkness…

It’s a great one. And one we can all relate to at one time or another. I too think Reznor is awesome. But Johnny’s version cuts me to the bone every time I hear it. He was in a dark, dark place at the time that album was released, and it comes through in every word.

I know some will freak out when I say this but… I have never been a fan of Johnny Cash… And I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a cover as much as an original. (I’m sure there’s an exception somewhere… but one doesn’t come to mind…)

I generally don’t like the cover as much as the original either, but there are several songs where the opposite is true. I love Johhny! And, in this case, I like the cover more. But, I get not being a Johnny fan. He’s an icon, but a bit of an acquired taste.

Apart from this song being well written and performed (Trent is one of my all-time music heroes). I love two things about this track (though I couldn’t listen to it too regularly). The first being the brutal honesty, and the second is that I believe their to be a hint of perseverance, a glimmer of hope. Thanks for posting as always!

I think I connect with artists who say what I feel. Perhaps sometimes it’s a little scary which artists those are…
