In addition to summer reading, my son, who is entering middle school in the fall, is required to do a project referred to as the “Go, Do, Create Summer Experience“. A list of ideas (just suggestions) was provided for this exercise — not all relating to fancy summer experiences like trips and such… which is good because we haven’t had that (unemployment, money, blah, blah…). It just has to be a project they put some time and thought into.
My son is horrified! He is a smart A+ kid… it’s not the ability that weighs on him. It’s coming up with a project idea… and having to take time away from doing whatever he wants ‘because it’s summer break‘…
We found something on the suggestion list that we agreed might be a good idea: Create a map of your town or ideal community… or a floorplan of your real or ideal home.
[Oh, and it’s not lost on me that we are only working to choose something now, more than halfway through summer… I blame myself for that one. I’m such a pushover.]
When the boy and I discussed how he might use this idea, he was his wonderful, witty self. He immediately said ‘ideal community‘. And then he quoted, word for word, the dream he shares (most of it, anyway) with a certain fictional character.
This one…
Yes, I’m mentioning this movie (Tangled) again… but Flynn’s dream… oh, he’s the best.
I have dreams like you — no, really!
Just much less touchy-feely
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
On an island that I own
Tanned and rested and alone
Surrounded by enormous piles of money
I am certain there will be no mention of this movie in my son’s actual project. But my God, it was hilarious when he quoted this! My daughter and I started singing the whole song! Oh… how I adore these kids of mine!
[For the above humorousness… go to 2:25.]
I like that he chose something that was just plain fun. That’s the way education should be.

I agree! Of course, he still things it cuts into his summer! 🙂

He probably loves it and just doesn’t want you to know to protect his image. 🙂

I told him he’s going to have to let me live on the island with him. He agreed… but apparently I am not allowed to bring his little sister! 😃

That is cool! It sounds like a fun project. But man, summer is for goofing off when you’re a kid. We all turned out ok. Well ok-ish anyway! 😂 I bet he’ll nail it!

I never had dinner projects or even summer reading when I was a kid! But hopefully he will let go of his horror about this! 🙂

I told him to build each part out of LEGO, take a picture for the map, than build the next one. But I’m pretty sure he’s not going to do that.. Hahaha 😀

That’s a great idea! 😃

That’s so cute! It sounds like a fun project. My youngest daughter begins middle school this year, too. I can’t even believe that.

Oh I can’t believe it either! And he’s my first… I’m all anxious about it! More than he is, I think…!

I was too, with my first. And now the second! Middle school is a huge time of transition. I think it’s more challenging than high school that way. They find they’re way, though. My oldest just turned 15 and begins her sophomore year in high school. Typing that makes me feel old! Lol.

Yes… It all makes me feel old… And mine are 11 and 8… I think I’m going to go through this anxiety again with my daughter even though she’s not the first because she’s a girl…much more drama!

Yes, I think so too. I have two girls, and I’m no less worried for this one than I was the first!

The fact that pretty much everything makes me anxious doesn’t help… LOL

Ditto. I’m much better than I used to be, but still.😉
