part 9.

“Can I get you anything?”

“Greg… you don’t have to wait on me.”

“I know.”

He sat beside me. I tried to look at him but I couldn’t get the picture of Dan out of my head. I just wanted to stop seeing it. When I couldn’t, tears started falling from my eyes again. I covered my face with my hands and didn’t even bother trying to stop crying anymore.

Greg cautiously wrapped an arm around my shoulders. The moment I felt him touch me, I turned to him and hid my face in his chest. As soon as I did, he surrounded me in his arms. I could hear the longing in his sigh when he pulled me closer. Some part of me knew being in his arms again would only make it more difficult to resist him, but the rest of me needed to be held so badly I didn’t care.

“Amy…?” I’d never heard his voice quite so soft and deep. I wanted him to keep talking. For hours. While holding me. “I want to help… how can I help?”

“You are helping.” My words were almost whispers.

“I hope so.”

“You are. I would be a mess if I were alone. I’m kind of a mess anyway.”

Slowly, he let me go and waited for me to look at him. When I did, he gave me a little smile. “You are not a mess.”

“Now you’re just being nice…”

“Shut up.”

He made me smile. I adored that he could do that no matter what horrible things were racing through my mind. “How do you always make me smile?”

“I don’t know… by being funny looking?”

“You are not funny looking.”

“Neither are you.” He gently pushed my hair away from my eyes, tucking it behind my ear.

“I think there’s going to be a problem tonight…” I sighed softly. Yes… a problem. God, I want him to kiss me.

“Why…?”

He knows exactly what I’m thinking. And he’s thinking the same thing. And he’s adorable pretending he’s not. “Greg…”

“What?”

“Maybe I should go to my mom’s.” God, I do not want to leave.

“Amy, I want you to stay.”

“I know, but…” But I want to rip your clothes off. Dammit! I have to stop thinking about that.

“Do not finish that sentence. But I do want to know something.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Why did you call me?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t even realize I was doing it until you answered.”

“You secretly miss me.”

“Greg… that’s not a secret.”

“I’ve missed you, too. And I’m glad you called me.”

“I am, too. But there’s still a small problem.” Before he could say anything, I continued. “I don’t have anything with me.”

“Tell me what you need…”

“Everything… a toothbrush… something to sleep in?” Like… your warm perfect arms…

He stood. “Don’t go anywhere.” I watched him walk away until he disappeared.

I closed my eyes and took a few long, slow breaths. I was tired. My head was throbbing. And, God help me, other parts of me were throbbing, too. But I didn’t have the chance to think about that. Which was probably a good thing.

Greg returned to me holding a toothbrush and a shirt. I took the toothbrush from his hand and stood. He handed me his shirt.

“Is this okay?”

I took his shirt and nodded. “Yes. Thank you.”

“Amy, you look tired.” He laid his hand on my arm and I sighed softly. When he touched me, even just my arm, I felt it everywhere.

“I’m all right.”

“Maybe you should eat something…”

“I don’t think I can. I just want to lie down.” With you…

He nodded and I followed him to his bedroom. “If you need anything, please tell me, okay?”

I need you to undress me and kiss me and lay me on your bed and… “I will.”

He didn’t move and he didn’t look away. I couldn’t take my eyes from him either. With the hint of a smile on his face, he slipped a hand into my hair and pulled my head to his. And he kissed me.

Softly and sweetly.

On my forehead.

“I’ll be right out there…”

I rested my hand on his chest, just for a moment. “Okay. Thank you…”

“Amy, you’ve got to stop thanking me.”

I smiled. “Shut up.”

And he smiled. And again, I watched him walk away.

swirl.

To be continued…

About what sandra thinks

Sandra is a writer, sometimes blogger, poet, artist, emotional disaster. She thinks far too much and sleeps far too little. Sandra lives in the Northeastern U.S. but dreams of an oceanfront home in Italy, but she would settle for a non-oceanfront home in Italy. She loves books, brutal honesty, coffee, and the color black. She hates insincerity, beer, whipped cream, and facebook. And she is uncomfortable talking about herself in the third person.

Perfect! He’s a gentleman. He doesn’t want to take advantage of her vulnerability. Even though they both want it. This is the right thing for him to do. Love! Love! Love it!

    • Thanks 🙂 I really wanted this to be longer but it got so late last night (or early in the a.m. I suppose). So much more in my head but I just couldn’t seem to find all the right words… I want to work on this today but the kids are already using my home as a freaking racetrack. I should probably stop them before they break something. Or someone…

Ahahaha! Sounds like summer is officially on! 😀 The story was long enough. Gave us a glimpse of what they’re both thinking/feeling. This should play out a bit. They don’t have to immediately fall into bed. (As long as they get there eventually!)

Perfect. We all know where this is going (unless you throw in some real twisters!) but you’re weaving it beautifully. Love it.
