When I was a little girl
I believed in fairy tales
but as years floated by me
my belief began to fade.
No longer did I think
love was coming for me.
Everyone always said
those stories are not real.
I tried to hold on
to cling to wishes.
I prayed to the Gods
but no one listened.
I remain one
not to be two.
I know I am
a naïve fool
to go on
dreaming of
fairy tales
magic love
and still
hoping
to be
adored.
A note about this poem: I don’t know if anyone noticed the ‘pattern‘ (I use the term quite loosely) in this piece. I think I hope you didn’t… I want the story to hide the ‘pattern‘. But I do think it makes the poem flow better than it might otherwise…
The first four lines are 7 syllables, the next four are 6, then 5, then 4, then 3, then 2.
I didn’t notice the pattern but the poem flows so well. And the picture is perfect for your words!

Thanks Diane! I wasn’t sure about posting this one… at least not right now… because it sounds like I am a sad, delusional child… And that may be accurate… But not today (for a change…)! 🙂

No, it makes you sound like a lovely and talented writer. I’ve always believed in fairy tales!

Well… me too… but they tend to make “real life” kind of disappointing. Where the hell is that gorgeous man with my other glass slipper?? I’ve been limping around on one for way too long…!

No, I think the trick is believing your Prince has already come (and not until after you do, lol) 😉

Aahhhahaha… laughing at the second part. Ahh, but the first part… I don’t really believe that… Oh hell, I don’t want to believe that…because it’s no fairy tale! If my current life is my fairy tale, it’s not a very good one!

Aww, just the prince, maybe?

What? The prince? What? If this is my price, he needs…um.. “prince-ing” lessons. Because he was clearly absent that day!

Hahaha, well, you’re the queen, make him shape up!

Damn, if I could I would have done that AGES ago. Apparently, I’m just a figurehead. I have no real power…

Really loved this Sandra. A tad sad and nostalgic but beautiful. Ah, if life was only like fairy tales. xo

I’d probably settle for “not the total opposite” of a fairy tale…!

Disney, fairy tales, romance novels…. sets the bar way too high! I love the pattern, which I did not pick up on, so I’m glad you pointed it out. It did make the poem flow nicely!

Thanks, bestie. 😀 Yes… bar too high. Need a lower bar. Maybe if I find one, I will take up drinking…

Cool structure! But a sad, but too often true tale…

Thanks so much! Oh yes… sad but true…

Neat pattern. I believe many girls grow up watching Disney and having a somewhat rose-coloured view of love in real life. I don’t think we can wait for a prince to save us, we have to save ourselves and build our own lives.

We should always believe in fairies, and white knights and all those daydreamy things. I noticed the pattern but only because I read it three times 🙂 Lovely poem.

Aww… wow, three times! That is quite a compliment. Thank you so much. It seems like a sad poem, and it is in a way, but while she thinks she’s a fool, she still continues dreaming and hoping. If nothing else, the fairies and white knights can live in my fiction!
