I almost forgot to post a perk this week. I’m such a slacker!
My children don’t spend hours playing video games. They are not especially interested in sports either. Oh, they love the computer and the tablet and all things techie, but they don’t spend all their time with a screen in front of them despite their parents setting a terrible example. And you can blame their parents for the lack of interest in sports, too… we’re not interested either.
What they love is imagining, creating, and building. We’ve got an almost obscene amount of LEGO in our home. (Oh, I’m not screaming LEGO, by the way. All caps is the proper spelling. And the plural of LEGO is LEGO. Yes, thorough research has been done.)
I am often recruited to assist, especially with the ‘home’ projects. Everything in the pictures below was created from imagination — no ‘official’ LEGO set instruction booklets used. My favorite is making the kitchen. Oh… and the beach house — that was all me. Didn’t even have to ask the kids for help!!
I thought about sharing these quite a while ago, but I forgot until a conversation I had with my friend Diane today (thanks!). I hope you enjoy them… they were lots of fun to build!

A few days ago, my daughter very excitedly showed me the triple-decker bunk beds she built. Then she told me she couldn’t put them in her house because the ceilings were too low… Haha! 😀

Oh, I should have been… I know. I think I would have loved that. But at the time (high school/college), it wasn’t something I ever even thought of… and I didn’t really have good guidance counselors/advisors… no one ever told me that would be the perfect job for me until way after I was able to go back to school for it! Yes… more regrets. I wish I could sell those. I’d be rich. 🙂

I’m pretty sure this is it for me. It’s a little late for me to do anything I haven’t already done… like, for a job, I mean. I don’t have the time or the money to get any further education (nor the financial security to start over at the bottom)… and unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how good I am at something… if I don’t have the specific education or job experience for a job, they don’t even call. I’d love to make a living with any of the creative things I do… but sadly, that’s not going to happen…

Horrible crap I hated. LOL. I have never known what I wanted to be when I grew up… still don’t. So I took whatever jobs I could. I’ve done a million things… advertising operations (not creative… I didn’t have the background but I was a manager until I got laid off — that was my first layoff, not the most recent one), briefly a marketing assistant, account reconciliation (just reconciling and researching discrepancies… I’m not an accountant so not an actual accounting job — I can’t get one of those… not that I want one though I am excellent with numbers), and I’ve done all levels of payroll, payroll tax coding, billing, reporting… A TON of crap. I HATE the corporate world… but I’ll never be able to earn enough doing anything else. Sure anything is better than nothing (my current salary LOL), however, as soon as we pay for after school care or summer camp, “any” salary isn’t okay… because it would make no sense for me to work and throw all my earnings into childcare. I might as well just be with my kids!
Anyway, sorry for rambling on. I have felt trapped for a long time… especially since this layoff. The thought of another corporate job makes my skin crawl… but I have no other options…

No, I understand. Been in that spot before, but after I had to leave work when youngest was born, I ended up working at home for court reporting firm for 16 years transcribing. Not terribly exciting but flexible hours. Also subbed in school district — in IL if you have college degree any subject you can — and that worked with school hours. I’m the queen of job changes 🙂 you’ll find something, don’t give up!

I would love a work-at-home job but I’ve had no luck getting one of those either… most I’ve seen barely pay anything. Like, maybe it’d pay for my coffee. Ugh.
It’s really bad because I am so anxious about the whole thing that as soon as I start working on my job search, I start to have a panic attack and I have to stop. No pill is strong enough to stop that! Well, unless it knocks me out at which point I wouldn’t be job hunting anyway! Of course, now it’s May and the kids get out for the summer in about 5 weeks… it makes no sense for me to start working until September at this point. So I’m a little “justified” in not looking right now… but come September, I’m going to be a disaster!

Do you take Xanax or Ativan for panic attacks? No daily meds? You should get those under control first. I take Effexor and can’t do a lot of caffeine as it makes anxiety worse. You can do it! Email me if you want, wish I lived closer! How about a temp agency in the fall where you could work short time to see if a job was a good fit?

Great little creations! I used to love my technics sets as a child. I’m so glad LEGO is making a comeback, it seemed to have fallen out of favour a bit a few years ago but now ‘everything is awesome’ again!

Oh, there are so many sets that have pretty girl colors now… And the “LEGO Friends” cute figures that are different than the standard ones everybody recognizes. When I was a kid, I only remember having basic bricks, roof pieces, doors, windows, wheels… 🙂

The kids spend a LOT of time playing with it! I play sometimes… but I tend to use the time to write since the kids are occupied! But once school’s out, I am really going to have to get them to run around outdoors… which will be good for me since I will be with them… LOL

What would that be? You mean something I could do for a living? Sadly, I’m sure I’ve already thought of it but cannot do anything about it. I have no “real” background in any of the things I enjoy so no one will hire me (I have tried… a LOT)… And I cannot afford (financially or with respect to time) getting a whole new education and starting over…

Oh, I don’t think I have the nerve or the courage to do that! And I know I don’t have the money. Plus the whole dealing-with-people thing… that’s nearly impossible for me. 😦 My sister always told me to start a business with the cards, invitations, announcements, etc., that I create. But I am not a sales person and that’s essential. Plus paper goods like those are dying a slow death due to technology. Demand seems to be low. And when I look at Etsy shops with such things, I don’t feel like mine are as fabulous anymore! God, I sound really negative. I don’t mean to… I am just such an anxious loner. I guess I know my limits… and there are way too many!

Where is the love button? Somehow I have a child who is ambivalent about LEGO. Can you imagine? I like her a bunch, but that’s a pretty serious flaw!

I’m not sure how my kids’ LEGO obsession started, but oh my have we got a ton now! Birthdays and holidays… it’s the most frequent gift received! My son’s birthday wish list was a list of LEGO sets he wanted… nothing else!

Yeah, I know kids like that, in fact I have a friend whose entire mantle and family room bookshelves are filled with complex LEGO models. It makes me jealous.
